Having visited the Postojna Caves in Slovenia last year, I was very excited to step foot into the country’s capital city.

Blowing all expectations, I unearthed a vibrant town with rich nightlife, meaty food and delicious wine.

I embarked on a food tour, tasting local dishes such as Kranjska Klobasa (smoked sausage), Prekmurska Gibanica (dessert with cottage cheese, egg, walnuts, poppy seeds and apple), Idrijski Žlikrofi (dumplings with meat) and Kisla Jukha (pork soup with vinegar and vegetables).

Walking down the streets of Ljubljana felt oddly cathartic, as the buzzing nightlife, inviting aromas, and the cobblestone paths, create a warm bubble.

The Slovene people are dedicated in creating an eco-friendly capital city, with free electric-powered public transport around the capital, and bike sharing services. They are also a leading nation in the promotion of bee conservation, and honey is one of their top exports. National Geographic named it the most sustainable country in the world, and the European Union officially labelled it Europe’s Greenest Capital.

If you have some extra time in Slovenia, certainly make time to see Lake Bled (featured on the front of Lonely Planet’s guide), as you will experience breathtaking 360 degree views of the infamous church on the lake.

I only spent a 24 hours in this incredible capital city, so it is definitely on my list of places to revisit!
