While backpacking through Central America this year, I was fortunate to visit the oasis that is the country of Belize. My favourite place in the country is a small Caribbean island off the coast – Caye (pronounced ‘kee’) Caulker.

When I arrived, I kept saying to my fellow travellers that the island reminded me of where James Bond would hide on the down-low.

Bungalows, palm trees and bar shacks were the only things that lined the dirt streets. You won’t find any cars, modes of transport are strictly golf carts, bicycles or by foot.

Me and my crew dropped off our backpacks at Tropical Island Hotel and explored the town. Note: It really doesn’t take long, you could probably tour most of the island in less than an hour. But along the way you can spot:

  • Tarpon Feeding Dock
  • Stingray Beach – it’s what it sounds like
  • Cute shops with jewellery and souvenirs

The bars are top notch, but my favourites were Sip n Dip Beach Bar and Salty’s. You have to try the local rum!

A must do that I can’t recommend enough is to go snorkelling at Hol Chan Marine Reserve – one of the oldest marine protected areas in the country. Here you can get up close with tropical fish, sharks, rays, turtles and even manatees. There are many day and half-day tours that provide food and equipment.

Residents of Caye Caulker have a motto “Go Slow!” And boy do they live by it. Take your time and enjoy the scenery, maybe even with a cocktail in hand!
