Have you ever been to a city that instantly feels like a second home? That’s what the small town of Siem Reap in Cambodia feels like to me. After visiting for the fourth time, I’d like to think I know the town pretty well, so I’ve compiled a list of my must visit attractions and best places to eat, drink, shop and party.

  1. Koh Ker: To me personally, Koh Ker is the most underrated set of temples in the Siem Reap province. The area ranges from many tiny temples and tombs, to the main pyramid shaped structure in the picture above. When I visited I went in peak travel season, but managed to avoid mass crowds by opting to see a lesser known temple. Visitors can climb up to the top to witness some truly incredible scenery. Unlike Angkor Wat, Koh Ker is largely untouched and unobstructed so it gives a greater feel of what the historic Angkor empire was really like.
  2. Old Market: I’m not sure why I love the old market so much. Almost every stall sells the exact same clothes and souvenirs, but there’s something really enjoyable about roaming the paths to find that one unique treasure. Its fun to playfully haggle with the stallholders or even start up a conversation (I’ve made plenty of friends that way!). It’s also undercover so it can be a nice retreat from the humid and hot Cambodian climate.
  3. Viva!: If you’re looking for good Mexican food in the middle of South East Asia, Viva is the place. Ranging from nachos to fried chicken the variety and prices are fair. Also my favourite spot for frozen margaritas!
  4. Angkor Wat: What is a visit to Siem Reap without visiting this wonder of the world? It’s a must for tourists, but understandable with the breathtaking views, and infrastructure that has withstood centuries. I suggest visiting during dusk or dawn to avoid the crowds and the heat, but also to see the temples at the most beautiful time.
  5. Genevieve’s Restaurant: This is where I had Christmas dinner in 2012. For Aussies and Brits, it feels as if you never jumped on the flight to South East Asia. A homely feeling with super friendly staff!
  6. Rehash Trash: A seriously underrated gem! Rehash Trash is run by the Green Gecko Project that make mats, bowls, plates and more, out of plastic bags! It is a truly incredible project that is well worth your time and money. If you’re looking for a unique souvenir or present for your travels this is a great option. They have a small shop now open on Sombai Road.
  7. Angkor National Museum: The National Museum is a superb gathering of artefacts and stories from the Angkor Empire. History-nuts (like myself) will have no trouble spending an afternoon gaining a greater understanding of the powerful empire that existed for centuries.
  8. Golden Temple: Now with a range of luxury resorts and hotels, The Golden Temple restaurant is my go to place for dinner, in particular for their lemongrass chicken.
  9. Khmer Kitchen: Khmer Kitchen on Pub Alley provides popular day-long cooking classes for tourists. Not only do you learn to cook Khmer delicacies, but you also get to eat everything you make! Win-win!
  10. Blue Pumpkin: This local Ice creamery features traditional and international favours. In Siem Reap, Ice cream comes as a welcome treat particularly among the warmer days.
