Oh Nice, how nice you were!

(I love making that joke)

Nice is by far one of the best cities I have been fortunate enough to visit. Its captivating coastlines filled with temperate red coloured roofs and opulent super yachts cascade the horizon, and remind you that your standing in one of the most iconically romantic and artistic cities in the world.

I began my full day in Nice by walking to the beach for a late morning swim. Unfortunately I can’t completely put into words the serenity I felt when swimming in the cool water (honestly it is the best swim I’ve ever had). This was quickly contrasted by the risky barefoot run over the pebbles from the water to my bag – tip: wear beach/sand shoes!

Next, I opted for a relaxed spout of souvenir shopping. While somewhat pricey, they do have really good tacky souvenirs.

As I discovered later in the day, the one drawback I had with the city, was the extremely rapid sunburn I got from less than an hour in direct sunlight. Being an Australian, it would be assumed that I would be sun smart (which largely I was, but I forgot to reapply after I went swimming). I later had to deal with excoriating pain while walking around Monaco and struggling to walk only in peoples’ shadows.

At night, my tour group and I headed to THE bar of the town – Wayne’s Bar. In reality, I think this bar is just really popular with young tourists, because I felt that there were a lot of Australians there. However this could be due to the fact that I went in peak tourist time.

Anyway, the live band at the bar was all the rage, as they covered a wide range of beloved western classics such as Bohemian Rhapsody (pretty sure I sang louder than the band for that one) and Living on A Prayer. The highlight was actually the whole night, as the band and the bar itself, encouraged everyone to stand on the tables instead of the floor. And that, was where I stayed the entire night.

The somewhat fuzzy walk back to the hotel, consisted of some friends trying to jump into the central fountain and ride the horse statue… I guess some nights you just can’t plan.

I plan to visit Nice again in the near future, and hopefully stay long enough to fully absorb the rich culture that is ever-present in film, literature and art.

For now I’ll spray on some french perfume and reminisce about the timeless seaside that awaits for my return.
